Manchester Art Gallery Volunteering

Continuing with my volunteering at Manchester Art Gallery I have taken part in one of the Family Activity Days. The project for the weekend was looking at lines and shapes in paintings in the gallery. The children had to re-create these lines and shapes from the paintings using matchsticks, lollipop sticks, straws and wire. The children were very creative and came up with lots of imaginative ideas. They were able to quickly think on their feet, using their initiative to create, either their own shapes or copying shapes from the paintings.

The project was looked at from different angles, some children decided to make an installation on the floor of the gallery using matchsticks and straws of their favourite place. They had to think of different ways to bend the straws and wire and how to connect them together.

Other children sat beside one of the paintings and looked at the composition and form. Using the matchsticks, lollipop sticks, straws and wire they recreated the compositions.

I think the project worked really well, because although the children were given difficult objects to work with, they used them effectively and understood the different compositions and the use of lines and shapes in paintings.
