18 Project.
From late July 2004 to mid January 2006, Christine Gatti took two photographs. One of her face and the other of her surroundings, on the 18th minute of every hour. Gatti chose the 18th minute because she was born on the 18th of November and ever since she was young she has always noticed the numbers '11:18' on the digital clock next to her bed. Each time being a strange and familiar coincidence.
Gatti motivation behind the project was a very personal and pratical one. She wanted to be present in her own life, to come out of her head for a moment of every hour and tkae note of where she was in the physical world.
"I saw the project as meditation; a ritual, a commitment added to a less committed life; an experiment."
I think this project is simple yet very effective. There are over 20,000 photographs in total. The dedication and commitment to photograph herself at every 18th minute of every hour for 18 months is remarkable. The project is quite personal, I feel that Christine Gatti has allowed the viewer to enter into her life and I feel as if I know her.
Gatti has doubled exposed the photographs of her surroundings and the photograph of her face.
